Brief answer guide for the teacher
1–5: Europe faced destruction, debt and political instability. Recovery was uneven; the Depression intensified hardship. The leaders are Hitler and Mussolini. Fascists gained support by promising order, national strength and solutions to economic problems.
6–8: Possible examples include mass production, cars, jazz, Hollywood and consumer goods. Buying on credit means paying later. Borrowed-money speculation is risky because share prices can fall while the debt remains.
9–11: The Depression began after the 1929 crash. Unemployment and business failures increased, and many people lost income or savings. Hoover tried measures to address the crisis, but many Americans felt they did not go far enough.
12–15: The Weimar Republic was Germany’s democratic government after the Kaiser’s abdication. The Depression increased unemployment and weakened confidence in democracy. Hitler promised recovery, order and national revival. He was appointed Chancellor in January 1933.
Matching: 1–C, 2–(buying goods and services), 3–D, 4–A, 5–B. For E, the matching term is fascism.
